AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Police officers allegedly saw Auburn running back Eric Smith knock a fellow student unconscious outside a hotel near campus.
Smith turned himself in to police Monday on a third-degree assault charge for the incident early Friday morning.
A police document obtained by The Birmingham News and Opelika-Auburn News Monday indicated that the 19-year-old sophomore struck Decari Jenkins in the back of the head. Smith told police that Jenkins had punched him earlier and the report said Smith's nose appeared to be bleeding.
Smith was originally charged with disorderly conduct but Jenkins filed the assault complaint.
Jenkins was taken by ambulance to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment. The report said he sustained a cut and severe swelling around the eye.
Smith has not practiced since his arrest.
