Marion riot forces football game to move

MARION, Ala. (AP) - A high school football game scheduled for Friday night in Marion has been moved to avoid rekindling a family feud that sparked a melee earlier this week.

Maxine Coley, principal of Francis Marion High School, said Tuesday the game between Francis Marion and Hale County High has been relocated to Moundville.

Authorities say a fight between members of two families after a Sunday afternoon basketball game resumed the next day when the two sides confronted each other at Francis Marion.

Police made two arrests. The groups then moved to downtown Marion, where the number of people swelled to as many as 400.

Law enforcement agencies across west Alabama sent personnel to assist local police and had the crowd under control within a couple of hours.
