MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Residents in North Montgomery were startled when they heard an explosion Wednesday morning.
The booming sound came from the explosion of a 28,000 gallon tank that was holding methanol
The tank was located on top of the Kinpak Windshield Fluid Manufacturer at 2780 Gunter Park Drive East.
Inspections/Investigations Assistant Fire Chief, William Davis said the building was evacuated just after 7:00am and no one was injured.
The methanol somehow ignited, rupturing its holding tank. Davis said the resulting explosion sent a huge fireball into the sky.
The remaining methanol, which is a key ingredient in windshield wiper fluid, was moved to another tank.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
