BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) - While talking about health insurance, President Obama singled out Alabama as a state that currently lacks competition when it comes to private insurance.
The President's stated that, "In Alabama, almost 90% is controlled by just one company. Without competition, the price of insurance goes up and the quality goes down."
A Blue Cross spokesperson disputed the president's statement that their company controls 90 percent of the state's private insurance market.
Below is BlueCross BlueShield of Alabama's response to President Obama's remarks.
"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama supports making changes in the current healthcare system. However, any proposal adopted by Congress should build upon what is already working well in the healthcare delivery system and should focus on individuals and their healthcare needs.
Blue Cross competes with over three hundred companies licensed to sell healthcare insurance in Alabama. Because we provide high quality healthcare coverage at rates lower than the national average, Blue Cross continues to be Alabamians' health insurance carrier of choice. When given the opportunity to go to another insurance carrier, almost 95 percent of our customers choose to stay with Blue Cross.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama employs more than 3,500 individuals and is the largest provider of healthcare benefits in Alabama, providing coverage to more than 3.6 million people, including 2.2 million Alabamians. For more information go to www.bcbsal.com."
