Ala. soldier dies of illness in Afghanistan

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Department of Defense confirmed Thursday the death of an Alabama soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Robert D. Gordon II, 22, of River Falls in Covington County died Sept. 16 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany.

Gordon's death was from a non-combat related illness. The exact illness was not disclosed.

The soldier became ill Sept. 11 in southern Afghanistan according to the Defense Department.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
