    In my editorial on Tuesday I chided our legislators for being the last state to pass a no-brainer  bill legalizing home brewing.  Today I want to challenge them to be one of the first states to pass another no-brainer;

    Kudos, or perhaps, cheers to the Alabama Legislature for passing HB9, the home brewing bill. Legalized home brewing may not be up there with education reform or prison funding, but it was overdue.

Congratulations to Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School, selected by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon school of excellence.

It is one of only four schools in Alabama honored and one of only 314 public and private schools in the country selected.

Brew Tech offers career academies in several fields to its 532 students:  medical, information technology, architecture, engineering, graphic design, ecommerce, building science and college and careers.

The school climate is conducive to learning and the classroom certainly comes to life with the career academies.

The rigorous academic curriculum is supplemented as well with challenging extra curricular activities like the Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology Robotics Team, that has placed in the top 5 in the South twice in the past five years.

Brew Tech is only nine years old and students from more than a half dozen countries are represented here, thanks to the Air War College.

With more schools getting national recognition and AYP scores in the district growing, the Montgomery Public School system's star is shining brighter.

We encourage all schools in the system to contribute to the growing excellence.
