Schmitz gets short prison reprieve

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Former state Rep. Sue Schmitz won't have to report to federal prison as scheduled Wednesday.

The 64-year-old Schmitz won a short reprieve Monday when U.S. Magistrate Judge Harwell G. Davis agreed to hold a hearing Wednesday afternoon on Schmitz' motion that she be allowed to remain free on bond while her federal fraud conviction is being appealed.

The 64-year-old Schmitz of Toney was convicted in February and has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.

She was accused of using her position as a legislator to obtain a job with the two-year college system and then rarely showed up for work.
