MPS unofficial school board notes 9/29

These are the unofficial board notes of the meeting of the Montgomery County Board of Education's monthly meeting on September 29, 2009. The official minutes will be posted after Board's approval at a future meeting.

The Board honored Brewbaker Technology High School and businessman and philanthropist Sam Adams.

Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School was recently named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Making it one of only 314 schools nationwide and one of only two schools in Alabama to receive the honor this year. Blue Ribbon status is one of the nation's highest education awards given to schools, and MPS now has the distinction of having had two schools receive this award, when Forest Avenue received it in 2007.

The Board also recognized and thanked Mr. Sam Adams and the Adams Foundation for its annual $10,000 gift in support of our investment club students.  Mr. Adams presented the principals of Lee, Jefferson Davis, Lanier, and Loveless High Schools with a check for $2,500 each to fund their investment club programs (to enhance their career academies) this year. Throughout the year, investment club students meet, conduct research and decided where they will invest the money.  During the process, students learn sound investment skills and basic principles of money management. The money may be invested as the clubs see fit, with the stipulation that 10% of the allocation must go to charity. The Sam Adams' Foundation's mission is to teach students to be responsible with money and how to leave a lasting financial legacy.

The Board approved the Consent Agenda which included the Medicaid Administration Claim Program Contract, which allows for reimbursement to the system for services delivered to students  a partnership with the Montgomery Education Foundation to provide data studies for the district, and the FY 10 Capital Plan which is required by the state. Supporting documents can be found at http://www.mps.k12.al.us/index.php/who-we-are/the-board/board-agenda.

The Board also approved the Personnel Report, Student Expulsion Report, the Finance Report and the Bid Report. Supporting information on the Bid report can be found at the link above.

The next meeting dates are the Committee of the Whole, October 13 and the regular monthly meeting October 27.
