SELMA, AL (WSFA) - It's a story that couldn't be more ironic or less funny.

The head of the Alabama State Troopers, Col. Chris Murphy of Birmingham, was the victim of a two-vehicle crash Tuesday.

Murphy, who's job it is to make sure the roads are safe from drunk drivers, was hit by a man suspected of drinking while behind the wheel.

The accident happened on U.S. 80 near Selma around 2:30pm. Neither Murphy nor the driver of the other vehicle was injured.

Murphy was traveling east on U.S. 80 headed back to Montgomery after giving a speech at the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center when the crash happened.

The driver of the other vehicle, who was not immediately identified, is charged with DUI, said Martha Earnhardt, spokeswoman for the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

The suspect told state troopers that today is his birthday, and he was headed to the bingo parlor in White Hall to celebrate.

Only minor damage was done to both vehicles in the crash in Dallas County.
