COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's Steve Spurrier and Alabama's Nick Saban share a passion for college football and reputations for being among the best at what they do.
The coaches and friends, then at Florida and LSU, also shared a plane ride nine years ago. Spurrier, then the Gators head ball coach was flying on Saban's Tiger jet back from an all-star game.
The national championship winning rivals will meet for just the third time ever when the second-ranked Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0) take on the 22nd-ranked Gamecocks on Saturday.
Spurrier says Saban is a talented recruiter and defensive coach. Saban thinks Spurrier is a skilled tactician whose offensive schemes turned football on its ear in 1990s.
