MPS unofficial meeting notes 10/14

Unofficial notes from the October 13 Montgomery Public School Committee of the Whole meeting.

MONTGOMERY, AL - The board was given an update on the various construction projects. Dalraida is the only active project in Phase One of the program that is behind schedule. The operations department and the management firm have been working with the contractor to move the project forward. A realistic opening date for Dalraida is now projected for early January.

The City of Montgomery is working to help turn revitalize a drainage ditch and return it to a natural stream. This project will provide outdoor classroom opportunities for Carver High School and the revitalization would have no cost to the school system.

The consultant for the district's strategic plan presented information to the board on its progress. The plan, while moving forward, has been slowed by personnel concentrating on proration, reduction in force, and other issues. Also, some personnel assigned to the plan are no longer with the district or have been moved to positions where their duties would not relate to the plan. The superintendent will be re-assigning personnel to those goals and the plan will begin to move forward more quickly.

A presentation was made to update the board on the progress and future work on the plan to decrease our energy consumption. We expect the project to save $600,000 or more the first year and a net savings of $16 million over the next 15 years.

The Federal Programs Section presented an overview of school improvement plans for those schools in School Improvement. They also provided the board with an update of their current work on various Title programs and the assistance being offered to schools using those federal funds.

The board discussed the nomination of the district director for Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB). The board's vote, which will be taken at the Oct. 27th meeting,  will be added to those other boards from AASB District Four.

The board also discussed the nominees for AASB delegates. Five of the seven board members will represent the board at the AASB meeting in December.

The next regular board meeting will be the regular monthly meeting October 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Chisholm Elementary School. The board will also continue their work with AASB's Lighthouse Project October 14, at 11:00 a.m. in the Central Office Auditorium.
