MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Mental Health is reminding folks that October is "Talk About Prescriptions" month.

The designation is aimed at encouraging teens and parents to learn the facts about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.

Every day in the United State approximately 2,500 teenagers illegally take a prescription medication for the first time.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse is also reaching out to teens through an educational video. The video, available at www.teens.drugabuse.gov, features NIDA scientists who explain the risks. The video also includes safety tips.

More than 12 million Americans admit taking a prescription pain reliever, tranquilizer, stimulant or sedative at least once in the last year just to feel the drugs' effects.

The NIDA also offers teens and parents other resources to help fight the growing problem.
