Banning texting and driving in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - "We've been there, and we know what can happen." says Governor Bob Riley.

You don't have to be a tech-savvy teen to see the dangers of texting while driving.

Riley agrees, "If you have ever texted you understand very quickly its the most distracting thing we have ever allowed on the roadway."

That's why he's starting now, rallying support to pass legislation to ban texting and driving during the upcoming Legislative session.

"If it's passing a law, lets pass a law.  If its doing more Taking Back our Highways, lets do it.  It works."

While high-tech devices catch the younger generation's eye, they agree, seeing an officer in their rearview mirror is enough incentive to put the phone down.

A 17 year old driver says, "I agree, cause no matter how many times you tell somebody not to do it, they're not going to stop until they have some consequences to face."
