Duke U police officer arrested in Alabama assault

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Duke University police officer has been arrested and charged with raping an Alabama woman.

The Dothan Eagle reports Tuesday that 37-year-old Webster Delenn Simmons of Rougemont, N.C., is being held on $120,000 bond. Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes said Simmons was arrested Monday and charged with felony first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy. Hughes said the 34-year-old victim and Simmons were at a local nightclub before the assault, which occurred inside Simmons' vehicle.

Detectives seized evidence including two pair of handcuffs, a ball gag, thick rope, an unknown power source with wires attached to a nail, along with a whip and flog. Hughes said the victim was possibly drugged and woke up early Saturday morning, handcuffed and with a ball gag in her mouth. Duke University Police Chief John Dailey said Simmons was suspended after the arrest.
