New trial denied for man in Wicksburg killing

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Houston County circuit judge has denied a new trial for a man who is on death row for the 2000 slaying of an 87-year-old woman. T

he Dothan Eagle reports Wednesday that Judge Ed Jackson refused to set aside the capital murder conviction of Rex Allen Beckworth, who was found guilty of killing Bessie Lee Thweatt. Beckworth's attorneys wanted the case overturned and cited concerns about one of the members of the jury. They alleged the juror failed to tell lawyers he'd read about the Thweatt murder in the newspaper, that he knew a prosecution witness and that he'd formerly worked for the FBI as a finger print analyst in 1959. Beckworth and James Earl Walker were convicted of beating and shooting Thweatt during a burglary at her Wicksburg home in January 2000.
