MONTGOMERY, Ala. "Ÿ Montgomery Public Schools' website has been cited as being among the best school system websites in the state when it comes to keeping the community informed.
The Alabama School Community Information Network (ASCIN) recently conducted a review of the state's 132 school district websites during the months of March and April 2009.
The MPS website was one of only 12 school districts in Alabama that contained 20 or more of the 34 criteria ASCIN cites as key components of an effective website.
Among them include basic contact information, daily lunch menus, academic rankings, complex financial data, school-by-school expenditures and archived financial statements.
Shelby County schools had 27 of the 34 items, followed by Madison City Schools with 24, and Montgomery, Mobile and Blount counties tied in third place with 22.
The review was part of ASCIN's Transparency Project, which recognizes districts that are working hard to be open and transparent with their local school communities. The evaluators reviewed the district web site, not individual school web sites.
According to ASCIN, the ultimate goal of the project is to encourage local school districts to put as much meaningful information as possible on their websites.
