Montgomery Computer Company Does Well In Face Of Recession

When Gerry Monroe lost his job 5 years ago, it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened.

"Oh, absolutely," Monroe said.

Today, Monroe and his partner are proud owners of an unusual company. Online Commerce Group not only makes computer software for 130 websites but also manufactures cushions and draperies, a side of the business that covers a pretty impressive list.

"We've done business with restaurants and the White House," said Monroe.

And through it all, Monroe managed to stitch together a good 5-year run with no affects from the economic recession; no layoffs, no cutbacks. Much of it because Monroe says he's been able to stay out of debt.

Company officials say on Cyber Monday sales rose 65% compared to last year's Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday by the way is where consumers log on to get better deals instead of physically visiting stores.

Joel Hutchinson works on the computer side of Online Commerce.

"When everyone was having their good years, we were having our bad years,' said Hutchinson.

And apparently it's paying off. Inc. Magazine ranked Online Commerce Group among the top 500 fastest growing private companies in the country.

"Instead of focusing on one door being closed, I focused on opportunities through the open door," said Monroe

Online Commerce employs 30 people.

The good news doesn't stop there. Gerry Monroe is looking for a few good people to hire in the production department.
