Brantley rolled up 361 yards total offense Thursday afternoon and captured the Bulldogs' first Class 1A state football championship since 1998 here at the University of Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Quarterback Chase Hall, the game's MVP, rushed for 95 yards and two scores on 14 carries and completed 5-of-11 passes for 120 yards and two more scores. His 55-yard touchdown pass to Tory Upshaw with 23 seconds left in the first half put Brantley (14-1) up 20-0. His 61-yard touchdown run with five seconds left in the third quarter answered Hackleburg's finest moment of the night – a 74-yard punt return by Joel Ingle that finally got the Panthers (14-1) on the scoreboard just 11 seconds earlier that cut the lead to 20-7.
Hall tossed a 52-yard TD pass to Teven Daniels and scored on a 2-yard run to give Brantley its early 14-0 lead. Trevor Holland hauled in a 31-yard pass from Bullock with 5:30 remaining for Hackleburg's final score. Bullock was 18-of-35 passing for 167 yards and one scored. He threw two interceptions and was sacked three times.
Ingle gained 55 yards on 13 carries and Holland had six catches for 74 yards. Ingle also had 122 yards in return yardage for the game.
For Brantley, Devante Porter ran for 83 yards on 13 carries and Upshaw had two receptions for 61 yards. Upshaw and Jared Wiley each had seven tackles for the Bulldogs. Upshaw and Daniels also one interception apiece. Hall had six stops and Clint Kilcrease had three sacks.
Jason Leggitt registered a game-high 13 tackles for Hackleburg and Jay Skinner had seven. Chris Cumbo added five tackles and one interception.
The 2009 finals was Hackleburg's first appearance in a state football championship game.
