MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) – Many retailers are calling Saturday the second busiest shopping day of the year.
Traditionally Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year for retailers.
However their hoping the Saturday before Christmas can be just as profitable.
"Yesterday I saw quite a bit of traffic but taking a look around I am seeing a lot more cars starting to fill up the parking lot and it's not even lunch yet and I am starting to see people rolling into parking spots and starting to fill up the shops," said Christian Faust while shopping with his family.
60% of Alabama Retailers say their sales are about even with last year and they're hoping this weekend before Christmas can give them a boost.
That's because they say they expect to see most of their customers in check out lines Saturday.
"We got here very early so we haven't seen a lot of crowds but it seems the longer we here the busier it's getting," says Curtis Simpson, who drove to Montgomery from Andalusia.
"I think people usually wait until the end and I mean everybody is busy working and now they are finally starting to get off work, they get some time off and I think they are taking a look around seeing if there are some sales and doing a little shopping and getting ready for Christmas," says Faust.
The next two weeks will determine if the 2009 holiday season is a good one for retailers.
In a recent survey of Alabama retailers 5% said they were seeing a decline in 2009 sales.
42% said they were selling less and 53% said they were selling about the same.
