Ala. congressmen want bowl blackout averted

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Three members of Congress from Alabama want the Federal Communications Commission to prevent a cable TV blackout that could keep some of their constituents from seeing the Jan. 7 national championship football game between Alabama and Texas.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile; Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, and Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, sent a letter asking the FCC to intervene.

The dispute that could lead to the blackout involves Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., which owns Pensacola-based WEAR-TV3, and Mediacom Communications Corp., which carries WEAR to customers in south Alabama.

Sinclair and Mediacom say they don't expect any WEAR content to be carried by Mediacom after Dec. 31.

The Press-Register reports that David Fiske, director of the FCC's Office of Media Relations, says the agency will study the issue.
