Sparks to announce political ambitions in days

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks says he will announce within about two days whether he will remain in the Democratic race for governor or switch to the 5th Congressional District contest.

Some Democrats in Washington have been encouraging Sparks to change races because U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith of Huntsville switched to the Republican Party last week, and the Democratic Party is looking for an opponent. Others have been encouraging Sparks to stay in the governor's race, where he's the only candidate advocating a state lottery and the expansion of gambling.

Sparks said Monday he's been meeting with his staff and will announce a decision within about two days.

Also seeking the Democratic nomination for governor is U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham.
