Downtown hot spot opens in time for New Year's party

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The finishing touches are all that's left on a project five years in the making.

"The concept and the design all started way back then," says Greg Allen.

It's called the Alley Station. Once a construction zone, it's now the newest downtown hot spot.

It's located in the downtown alleyway and is complete with a ballroom and rooftop terrace overlooking the city's skyline.

And, that's not all.

"There will be retail shops on one side and restaurants on the other. We have loft apartments, we have a gym," adds Allen, the owner of the property.

But for now, he says the ballroom and terrace are opening just in time to ring in the new year, and one organization wants to be first on the guest list.

"When we found out about the opportunity, we just couldn't say no," says Meg Lewis.

Lewis is the marketing chair for EMERGE Montgomery. It's a group of young professionals working to showcase the city.

She says their Alley Station New Year's Eve party does just that.

"We want to show off Montgomery, and this sort-of embodies what EMERGE is all about--what's new, what's upcoming, and really gives the feel of what we want Montgomery to be like."

As they try to bring attention to the city, they're hoping to reap some of the benefit.

"Hopefully again this year, lots of people will want to join up," adds Lewis.

She says they've partnered with city leaders to bring fresh ideas to the table.

It's a relationship she believes is working.

"EMERGE events like this and our leadership events have provided people with a number of opportunities, and really I don't hear that said very much anymore that there's not much to do...that's just not true."
