ENTERPRISE, AL (WSFA) - Fire fighters battled a huge blaze in historic downtown Enterprise Thursday. Investigators say the blaze started at Lanny's Athletic Club at 224 South Main Street.
The fire was so intense it damaged at least five other businesses including Scorpion Karate Academy and businesses all the way to Jada's down the street.
Apartments located behind Lanny's Gym were significantly damaged, but the Enterprise Police Department interviewed the residents of these apartments and are able to account for all but one adult male. The Enterprise Fire Department is currently conducting a search of the building.
Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced individuals and the Christian Mission Centers agreed to house them and help get them into permanent residences.
The Enterprise Police Department received a sexual assault call at 3:10am at the same location, but based on interviews, they have no reason to believe that the two incidents are related or that foul play was involved at this time.
Enterprise Fire Department Chief Byron Herring urges residents to stay out of the South Main Street area for the remainder of the day as they continue to clean up the area and perform their investigation.
Mayor Kenneth Boswell is also asking that residents keep the displaced individuals and business owners in their thoughts and prayers as they move forward. "This is a very difficult situation for anyone," he said, "and in light of the holiday season, we need to remember these people and pray for them as they transition and get past this incident."
The city is asking for patience and cooperation as investigators bring closure to the incident.
