MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The U.S. Marshals Service confirms it has captured an inmate who escaped from the prison on Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery in mid-December.

Russell Montague, 38, was taken into custody in Gulfport, Mississippi Tuesday afternoon around 2:30 by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.

Montague was serving 180 months at Maxwell for violation of federal firearms violations. Federal officials say he was trafficking narcotics using a stolen machine gun. He was convicted out of Jackson, Mississippi but was housed at Maxwell since 2008.

Authorities say the fugitive left the state of Alabama after escaping. He was tracked to Nashville, Tennessee and Dallas, Texas. At some point he made his way back south and was arrested in Mississippi.

Montague is said to have a history of escapes. He is being returned to Alabama to face escape charges.
