Victoryland lays off 200 employees

SHORTER, AL (WSFA) - One of the largest employers in Macon County says it laid off 200 employees Tuesday, though the measure is said to be temporary.

Milton McGregor, President of Victoryland, says the decision comes amid plans to renovate the gaming center's original structure. Equipment and people who work in the building had to be moved out while that process moves forward.

McGregor says the renovation is the early stages, and while he plans to rehire all those who want to come back, he has no timetable for when that will happen.

Victoryland recently completed a major expansion, adding a new section and the Oasis Hotel to the property.

The facility still employees more that 2,000 people from around the River Region.
