COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Columbus Police are investigating the attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl.

The incident happened Friday morning near Goodwin and Wright Drive off Buena Vista Road.

According to investigators, the child was walking alone to her school, Lonnie Jackson Academy, when a black man in his early twenties wearing a black skull cap and jacket and driving a green SUV pulled up beside her and tried to convince her to get in the car.

Police say the little girl told him "No," took off running and found a police officer.

This comes on the heels of the abduction and sexual assault of a 12-year-old student at East Columbus Magnet Academy.

Officials in the Sex Crimes Unit say she was walking alone to school Wednesday morning when she was abducted at gunpoint by a black man in his twenties, taken to a park and sexually assaulted before being released. The suspect's vehicle in that case is described as a gold or tan Dodge Durango or similar model.

At this point, Columbus detectives won't say if the two incidents are related. They note the vehicle and description of the suspect are different but they are actively working both cases.
