DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) – The city of Dothan is welcoming their newest police chief.

The Dothan City Commission approved the selection of current Dothan Police Captain Greg Benton as the new chief but not before a close vote.

Shortly before the vote though there were tense moments when Commissioner James Reading surprised many with a request to go into an executive session...

Reading would only say he needed to discuss the good name and character of the candidate.  After twenty minutes commissioners returned where it came down to a vote of 4-to-3.

Commissioner Reading was among the 3 who voted nay.

Despite the close vote, Benton say's he put the entire selection process in the hands of a higher power.

"I learned three months ago to turn everything over to the lord and that if it was meant to be it was meant to and I guess it was and I'm just happy and ready to move forward," says Benton.

Now at the helm of the department Benton says he looking forward to getting to work.

"I'm ready for the task and just working with the community and the men and women of the police department and just trying to set a vision for our department and where we want to be in the next 5 to ten years," adds Benton.

Benton has been with the Dothan Police Department for 21 years.
