Edwards admits fathering child out of wedlock

Chapel Hill, NC (CNN) — Former Democratic Sen. John Edwards is admitting he fathered a child with a videographer he had hired before his second White House bid.

Edwards initially denied he was Quinn's father, saying the affair with Hunter ended before she became pregnant.

In a statement, he said, "It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me."

Edwards' admission comes just days before a former campaign aide releases a new book.

Edwards and his wife Elizabeth -- who has been battling cancer -- have been married for 32 years.

They have had four children, three of whom are still alive.
