GOP gubernatorial hopeful hires strategist

Gubernatorial hopeful, Robert Bentley has hired a media strategist...the latest in a string of hires for the candidate.

Here are the specifics in a release from Bentley's campaign office:

TUSCALOOSA - Dr. Robert J. Bentley announced today that veteran GOP media strategist Bob Wickers of Dresner, Wickers & Associates has signed on as Dr. Bentley's Media Consultant.

Upon announcing Mr. Wickers hiring, Dr. Bentley said, "Bob has a breadth and depth of experience working for Governor Huckabee's Presidential campaign, and advising other successful candidates in come-from-behind-campaigns. I am pleased to have him on our team and expect that we will benefit tremendously from his expertise."

Campaign Manager David A. Ferguson added, "I look forward to the role Dresner, Wickers, and Associates will play in Dr. Bentley's campaign for Governor.

Their winning attitude and record of accomplishment for Governor Huckabee in the Iowa Caucuses and Alabama Presidential Primary will fit well within our campaign structure as our momentum continues to build."

In a feature article, The Wall Street Journal called Bob Wickers the "Spirit Behind Huckabee's Advertising Approach" - an approach that helped propel Mike Huckabee to victories in the first-in-the-nation Iowa Caucuses and in several other critical state primaries.

Previously, Bob Wickers was lead strategist for U.S. Senator Johanns' come-from-behind primary and general election victories for then-Lincoln Mayor Johanns' 1998 campaign for Nebraska governor. He subsequently served as media consultant and strategist for Norm Coleman's successful 2002 campaign for United States Senate in Minnesota.

Mr. Wickers' other clients include Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning. He began his career as a consultant to the California Senate Republican Caucus and on the staff of U.S. Senator Pete Wilson (R-CA).

Mr. Wickers also has been active in promoting democratic government abroad. He was part of the American team that guided Russian President Boris Yeltsin's successful re-election campaign in 1996. That effort earned him and his colleagues a TIME Magazine cover story, and the International Consultant of The Year POLLIE Award presented by the American Association of Political Consultants.
