MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Thompson has introduced a new recognition program aimed at recognizing the role school leadership plays in increasing academic achievement and enhancing the overall culture and management of schools.

The Principal of the Month Award, sponsored by KHAFRA Engineering Consultants and EastChase Shopping Center, salutes an elementary and secondary principal whose leadership ability, commitment to students, teachers and staff, positive attitude, and ability to build community support contributes to the overall success of their school.

The first recipients of this award are: Highland Avenue Principal Pat Kornegay and Lee High School Principal David Sikes.

Each principal received a gift certificate generously donated by KHAFRA and East Chase and a vase of flowers donated by Flowers by Buck. They will also be featured on the district's website.

Principals were nominated by school staff, district employees, parents or members of the community. The applications were evaluated by an independent panel made up of members of the community.
