Girl locked in closet for a year

BROWNVILLE, TX (WSFA) - A South Texas couple is behind bars for allegedly keeping their daughter locked in the closet for a year.

Alfredo and Leticia Ines are charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint.

Police say the couple let the girl out only to attend school and eat or use the bathroom during the day.

They say she had to use a bucket at night.

Police say she looked malnourished and small for her age.

"The reason that the mother gave is that they were locking her up so she wouldn't steal food out of the refrigerator," said Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique of Brownsville Police.

Child protective services began to investigate the situation after one of the girl's three brothers told officials at school.

The girl is now in foster care.
