Former Ala. caretaker pleads guilty to theft

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A 32-year-old Dothan woman has pleaded guilty to the theft of $70,000 from a 73-year-old woman and her son.

Houston County District Attorney Doug Valeska said Miranda Bond Lewis pleaded guilty this week to theft of property and possession of a forged instrument. Valeska said Lewis pleaded guilty to stealing from Laurie Morris while she worked as her caretaker. Court records show Dothan police arrested Lewis in October 2008. She was released after she posted a $60,000 bond. Valeska said Lewis pleaded guilty to stealing $55,000 from Morris, and another $15,000 from her son Charles Benson Morris, who was in Nepal serving as a missionary. He said Lewis forged checks with her employer's name and her son's name on them, and then deposited or cashed them.
