Gubernatorial candidate makes $500,000

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Democrat Ron Sparks has reported making a $500,000 personal loan to his campaign for governor even though the personal financial statements he files with ethics officials show little income beyond his salary as state agriculture commissioner.

Sparks recently filed a campaign finance report with the secretary of state showing he made a personal loan of $500,000 to his campaign on Jan. 8.

But the annual financial statements that Sparks has filed with the State Ethics Commission for the last three years show no land assets beyond his middle-class home in Montgomery and no income from any business, real estate or stock investments.

Sparks says he's disclosed all that is required on his financial statements, and he's got the savings and investments to make the loan.
