BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Nichols Stewart stole a pass and sank a 15-foot jumper as time expired to give Pickens County an 88-86 triple overtime win over Houston County in the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Class 2A boys championship game Thursday night.
After Houston County went up 86-81 with 14 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Andrew Bolden, tourney MVP Deion Curry hit a 3-pointer with 9 seconds left, then a pair of free throws 3 seconds later to tie the score.
Stewart's basket ended the longest championship game in state history and gave the Tornadoes their first basketball title.
Curry finished with 31 points, LaJuan Doss added 20, Stewart 17 and Markeithton Hall 11 for the top-ranked Tornadoes (27-2). Tyreek Granger led Houston County (26-10) with 22 points, Jeremy Robinson scored 17, Jazerek Peterson 12, and Earnest Tyson and Desmond Warren had 10 each.
