DECATUR, AL (AP) - A former Decatur police sergeant convicted of fleeing to Las Vegas with stolen drug money after faking his abduction is expected to be released from federal prison this week.
Faron White, the 49-year-old former supervisor of the Decatur Organized Crime Unit is completing his sentence at a prison in Oakdale, La.
In January 2009, White staged a struggle at his office, then flew to Las Vegas.
White pleaded guilty to a federal theft charge for stealing $82,000 from his department over a three-year period.
A judge sentenced him on Sept. 22 to 16 months in prison.
The judge gave White credit for the eight months he spent in jail awaiting court proceedings.
The Decatur Daily reports that White is expected to be released on Friday.
