Alabama bingo sponsor says bills dead for now

The sponsor of electronic bingo bills in the Alabama Senate says he won't make another attempt to pass them during this year's legislative session.

Democratic Senator Roger Bedford fell three votes short Wednesday when he tried to get the Senate to allow full debate on his constitutional amendment to tax, regulate and expand electronic bingo casinos. Bedford voluntarily delayed consideration of his other bill allowing some closed casinos to reopen.

An opponent of the bills, Governor Bob Riley, said senators understood the bills were crooked and gave a monopoly to a few politically connected casino bosses.

Another opponent, the Revernor Dan Ireland of the Alabama Citizen Action Program, said he expects the bills to resurface because too much money is at stake for casino operators.
