MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -The Montgomery Police Department is starting a new initiative called the "Safe Streets Team."
The new program is designed to step up police presence in specific areas of the city.
It's geared toward communities that don't have big problems but ones that just need a little push.
"This isn't a hard approach," said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. "This is the softer side of reminding people that we do have a presence and we want to be in these communities that are doing good as well, and we want to continue to do well," added Mayor Strange.
The initiative is different from the Neighborhood Watch Program because there will be police officers patrolling areas on bikes.
Part of the program includes handing out teddy bears. They even gave one to Mayor Todd Strange.
Officers started the initiative a few days ago in the Sunshine Acres Community.
