UA's Mitchell Named SEC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, AL The University of Alabama's Tony Mitchell has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Mitchell, a 6-6 forward from Swainsboro, Ga., helped lead the Crimson Tide to a pair of wins last week over South Carolina and Auburn.  He averaged 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds on the week and recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds at South Carolina. Eleven of his 13 points at South Carolina came in the second half to secure the win down the stretch.

Against Auburn, he poured in a team-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting with seven rebounds.

Mitchell and the rest of the Crimson Tide will begin the postseason portion of its schedule on Thursday, March 11 when they open up play at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. Alabama will face a recent opponent, South Carolina, at noon.
