Wayne Farms employee shot 5 times at work

UNION SPRINGS, AL (WSFA) - From the outside, its business as usual at Wayne Farms in Union Springs. Employees report to work  and truck drivers head out on their normal route.

But what happened behind closed doors at Wayne farms Tuesday is far from ordinary.

"We got the 911 call around 9:40pm" stated Lt. Louis Murry. Murry says Union Springs Police found employee Joe Smith in the company locker room, bleeding from 5 gunshot wounds.

The motive?

"There was no motive, something triggered it." Lt. Murry says there was a small altercation before the suspect, Vertis Anthony, pulled a gun on Smith.

Murry still feels that the quarrel didn't set Anthony off. "They had been working together, they know each other. It wasn't ill feelings," added Lt. Murry.

Which points investigators to a stark reality: the victim, Joe Smith, was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Hadn't it been him, it would have been someone else."

Vertis Anthony is charged with attempted murder. Officers are still waiting for a judge to set his bond.
