Former Mobile judge appeals disbarment

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former Mobile County Circuit Judge Herman Thomas is appealing a decision by the Alabama State Bar to disbar him.

Thomas' attorney, Robert Clark, said he filed notices Friday with the bar association and the Alabama Supreme Court, which will ultimately rule on the appeal.

The State Bar disbarred Thomas last month for spanking young men who were on his court docket and drafting legal documents while his law license was suspended. He was cleared of criminal charges last year involving the spankings.

Thomas is running as a Democrat for the state Senate against Democratic incumbent Vivian Davis Figures of Mobile. One of her sons was among the young men who testified against Thomas in court.
