WHITE HALL, Ala. (AP/WSFA) - The White Hall Entertainment Center in Lowndes County plans to reopen its electronic bingo machines after being closed for more than a month to prevent a raid by the governor's gambling task force, but the date is being pushed back.
White Hall attorney Collins Pettaway Jr. said the gambling hall aimed to reopen at noon Wednesday, but the decision was made Tuesday to hold off on reopening for nearly a week.
Officials with White Hall say they want to make sure they get their house in order before unlocking the doors. Employees say they still feel like the reopening could be a calculated risk and want to make sure everything is in place.
Delaying the reopen is the issue of compliance. Officials at White Hall are working to make sure all their games are in compliance with the six rules set by the Alabama Supreme Court in the Cornerstone case.
There's also the issue of getting in touch with more than 100 employees and rescheduling them.
Normally each March, the facility and its charity organization, Cornerstone, hand out grants to local nonprofit and civic organizations. Due to lack of revenue, however, that ceremony is being pushed back to a later, unknown date.
The gambling operation made the decision to reopen after Attorney General announced he would take over the governor's task force. That decision is being met with resistance from the governor's office and will most likely end up in the hand of the Ala. Supreme Court.
