AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn opened spring practice with four quarterback contenders - and a potential fifth candidate absent.
Coach Gene Chizik said after Wednesday's opening practice that redshirt freshman Tyrik Rollison is sitting out the spring to focus on academics.
Chizik said Rollison - the subject of transfer rumors - is still eligible and a member of the football team. Former Florida and junior college quarterback Cameron Newton had his first practice for the Tigers at quarterback.
Neil Caudle, Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley are also vying to replace Chris Todd. Newton was among five newcomers who are already enrolled and working with the team.
Chizik said running back John Douglas has left the team and plans to transfer.
