GOP claims votes to be block new bingo bill

The Alabama Senate Republican Caucus is confident it has the votes to block a new bill to tax and regulate electronic bingo games in the state.

Caucus leader Jabo Waggoner said at a news conference Wednesday there are 12 Republicans and four Democrats who will oppose the new bingo bill by state Sen. Roger Bedford, a Russellville Democrat.

That's the same number who succeeded in blocking Bedford's first bill on March 3. Bedford has shortened his bill, including taking out specific locations for electronic bingo casinos. He says he will try to bring up the bill in the Senate when he's lined up enough support.

Bedford said he revised the bill because critics called the original too complicated. Republican Caucus members said the new version is worse because it doesn't limit casinos.
