Traveling volunteer makes his way to Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Many people find it rewarding to volunteer. That's certainly true for Drew Johnson. He's taking his love of travel and helping folks across the country, all while blogging about his adventures.

Johnson is on week 22 of a 48 week journey. He calls it "48 By 48".  He travels to the 48 contiguous states in 48 weeks, helping a hand where ever and however he can while leading a "Service to Others" lifestyle.

While in Montgomery, he plans to lend his green hand planting a community garden along side the Montgomery Second Chance Foundation. In order to fund his travels, Johnson says he tries to keep it as simple as possible.

"I do it through donations. I do it through living a minimalist life style. I eat a lot of peanut butter and cereal, sleep out of my car over there once in awhile.  You know people put me up,  a free meal once in awhile.  I do my best not to take charity from the charity because those are the people I'm trying to help out and so far I haven't had to," says Johnson.

Johnson doesn't stick to one specific line of volunteer work.  He has volunteered with the Red Cross, local hospices, and other various organizations.   His next stop in Alabama is Mobile, AL where he will help out at the Humane Society. He will then continue on to Florida.
