TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities are warning residents about a recent home repair scam in the Tuscaloosa area.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division has seen an increase in complaints concerning roofing, home repair and landscaping cons.
Police the group of con men often use high-pressure sales and scare tactics, along with meaningless, technical-sounding jargon, to fool victims into hiring them.
Once the victim gives them money, the scammers will do minor and often unnecessary work to give the appearance of making valuable repairs. Then they leave promising to return the next day, but never do.
In some of the roofing scams, fraudulent claims are made against a victim's homeowner's insurance.
Police said residents should demand to see the business licenses issued by their city and county before hiring someone to do home repairs.
