College student disappears while canoeing in lake

JASPER, Ala. (AP) - Rescue workers and law enforcement officers are searching Smith Lake in north Alabama for a college student who disappeared canoeing.

The president of the Smith Lake Task Force, J.C. Poe, said three men were canoeing on the lake Saturday evening when the canoe capsized. He said one of the men, a 21-year-old college student, did not make it out of the water. Poe is also the Walker County coroner.

Poe told The Birmingham News that divers went into the water Saturday night, but couldn't find the man. The name of the missing man was not immediately released.
