MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the speed limits in one of Montgomery's busiest areas will decrease beginning Wednesday, March 31, on Taylor Road (State Route 271).
Between Vaughn Road and Halcyon Boulevard, the speed limit will decrease from 55 to 50 mph. Between Halcyon Boulevard and East Drive at Auburn University Montgomery (AUM), the speed limit will decrease from 55 to 45 mph. The speed limit from AUM to Atlanta Highway is already 40 mph.
New speed limit signs, variable message signs and radar speed limit signs will alert motorists of the changes.
The decision to lower the speed limits is based on an engineering study that shows, in part, that most motorists in that area currently drive around 45 to 50 mph. By lowering the speed limit, traffic capacity is expected to increase allowing for a smoother traffic flow. Adjustments to traffic signal timing could also help further improve traffic flow.
The average daily traffic volume on Taylor Road ranges from 29,000 vehicles north of AUM to over 41,000 at Vaughn Road.
