Ala. teacher jobs safe as House OKs $5.49B budget

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An education budget that protects most teacher jobs in Alabama has moved a step closer to final passage in the Legislature.

The Alabama House voted 104-0 Tuesday to approve a $5.49 billion education budget that saves most state-funded teaching positions. But some education jobs funded by local school boards could be lost, and teachers will be required to pay more for their health insurance. The budget provides no money for supplies for teachers and will mean few new textbooks for most students. There will also be no money for new books for school libraries. The budget will provide level funding for popular programs to improve student performance in reading and math and science.
