Gene Chizik pleased with Auburn's First Scrimmage

The Auburn football team held its first scrimmage of spring practice Saturday, running approximately 70 plays inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers used the first hour of practice concentrating on position drills and special teams work.

Head coach Gene Chizik called the Tigers' first scrimmage productive, despite ball security issues.

"I thought it was a really productive first scrimmage," Chizik said. "I felt like offensively we moved the ball. We did some things that were good. Our turnovers and ball security are still somewhat of an issue for us, and that was an issue today. Some of it was great plays by the defense; some of it was just sloppiness carrying the football. I thought we had a good number of explosive plays offensively. Defensively, we gained some turnovers today, which was one of the main focus points of what we were trying to do.

Chizik praised the defense and was pleased with work by the quarterbacks.

"I thought, for the most part, defensively they did a nice job on the run game," Chizik said. "They let a couple of big runs get out of there, which were really great plays by some of the tailbacks.

"They (quarterbacks) all did some nice things today and did some things we'd like to take back. But, for the most part, we were very pleased with the quarterback play. There were a couple of balls thrown up there we'd like to take back, that were interceptions or could have been potential interceptions that may have been dropped."

Auburn will take Sunday off before returning to the practice fields on Monday morning at 9 a.m. The closed practice will be held on the Athletic Complex fields.

Auburn's A-Day game will be held on Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m. CT in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Tickets are $5 for general fans and free for AU students with an Auburn Ignited card.

Darvin Adams, WR
On the scrimmage...
"The coaches really did not want me in that much, they wanted the younger guys to learn. I think they did a good job out there today."

On the offense's performance...
"I think we did really well. We moved the ball with a good pace and we had the defense really tired. I think all the quarterbacks did well."

Neil Caudle, QB
On the scrimmage...
"I think I did well, but I could be better. I had a few good plays, a few bad plays. But, overall, I think I did fairly well."

On the offense's performance...
"The offense as a whole did great. We had a few dumb mistakes but, overall, the guys played hard. We ran the ball well on the defense."

Mario Fannin, RB
On the scrimmage...
"We have to get better in some areas, but overall I thought it went well. We had a lot of explosive plays, which is already good for our offense. I thought we did an excellent job executing those plays."

On improvement over the spring...
"I just have to keep pushing and pressing forward trying to help this team out as much as I can.

Cam Newton, QB
On the scrimmage...
"There is always room for improvement. We had good plays and we had bad plays. Later on in the scrimmage we got the good plays."

On the offense's performance...
"We had good things and we had bad things. So, we are going to watch the film today and learn from our mistakes."

T'Sharvan Bell, DB
On spring practice...
"Spring is coming along well for us right now. We have a long way to go. It feels good out here but it is a grind. The first 15 days are tough. You have to get your mind back into the game."

On second year in current system...
"We have fewer things to learn. There aren't any excuses for doing what we do, we know the expectations. Where we are at this point is way ahead of how we looked last year. If you go back and compare film, we are a lot further ahead. You can see the strides we have made, but we still have a long way to go."

Josh Bynes, LB
On spring practice...
"Spring is coming along pretty quick. Defensively, we need to get a little bit better. We know what we are capable of doing and where we are capable of going. We are going into this spring with a totally different mind-set than we did last year. We have been in this system a year now so we know the expectations.

"Everyone is happy to get out and play spring ball - start hitting somebody. Spring ball is just like a season. At the beginning it is all good, then toward the middle and end it wears you out. You just have to keep the right mind-set and keep going."

Neiko Thorpe, DB
On spring practice...
"We are just trying to progress every day. There were some mistakes out there today but with mistakes come with hard work. We are going to watch film of the scrimmage later and correct any of those mistakes and focus on the things we did right."

On second year in current system...
"We are definitely ahead of where we were last year. Everything was new for the whole team last season. Now, we all have seen the system and know what the coaches expect. Everyone is excited. The first scrimmage was good and I am excited to see the film tonight."
