TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The University of Alabama is releasing details about a new project to mark the spot where former Gov. George Wallace made his "stand in the schoolhouse door" against integration of the school.
For years, the only recognition of the event on campus was a small brass plaque on Foster Auditorium, where it occurred in 1963. Now, with Foster Auditorium under renovation, university officials plan to build a plaza and a clock tower to commemorate the events that led to the integration of school. The proposal will go before University of Alabama trustees for approval this week.
